A well-trusted security software!
An easy-to-use software packed with numerous features.
Hotspot Shield is one of the most popular VPN services available in the market. Several key parameters have made it an effective package, thereby encouraging people from around the world to use the service. For starters, Hotspot Shield VPN has a much lower latency than competitors like TunnelBear and ExpressVPN. Additionally, many independent labs have reported that the service has high malicious URL detection rates.
While the free version is a bit slower, the premium version offers great streaming speed. In fact, it has overtaken popular services like Norton Wi-Fi and Avast. With additional features like multiple server connections, compatibility with global servers, and automatic deletion of IP addresses, Hotspot Shield VPN is exactly what you need for your Mac.
Simple and clean interface
With its easy-to-use design, Hotspot Shield offers a seamless user experience. All you need is a single click to activate VPN connections. In case a server fails, there’s a kill switch to instantly disconnect your Mac from the web. As such, your IP address and other information is never revealed.
Use your account on multiple devices
One of the most amazing benefits of Hotspot Shield VPN is that you can use a single account on up to 5 devices. This allows you to access global servers from Mac, iOS, Android, and Windows operating systems. Additionally, the VPN service comes with 24/7 live technical support, which resolves your grievances and issues promptly.
Exceptional speed to win the race
What’s a VPN without good speed? While the free version of Hotspot Shield is slightly slower than its paid counterpart, you’d still be pleased. With over 2,500 global servers in 25 countries, Hotspot Shield VPN allows you to enjoy exceptionally fast media streaming.
In fact, the abundant global servers ensure that a network will always be available. With such universal connectivity, Hotspot ranks even higher in terms of torrent download speeds. At 0.54 megabytes per second, the popular VPN service is also one of the fastest. It even beats major competitors like NordVPN and Avira Phantom VPN Pro.
Where can you run this program?
Hotspot Shield VPN is available for a wide range of operating systems, including macOS, iOS, Android, and Windows. For Mac, it’s recommended to use High Sierra, El Capitan, Sierra, and Yosemite.
Is there a better alternative?
While Hotspot Shield VPN is a great service, you might want to check out a few alternatives. With its two-layer protection and military-grade encryption, NordVPN allows you to browse blocked services and websites anonymously. Its fast speed enables you to stream all kinds of media without any hassles. NordVPN follows a stringent zero log policy and doesn’t keep track of your activity. There’s just one problem! As compared to Hotspot Shield’s premium version, NordVPN is a bit slower.
Another good choice is IPVanish. With more than 1,000 servers in 60 countries, the service has over 40,000 shared IPs. IPVanish doesn’t impose any data limits, allowing you to browse as much as you want. With 256-bit AES encryption, it keeps your internet connection secure. Additionally, IPVanish doesn’t prohibit you from downloading torrents. The only problem is the unresponsive customer support.
Our take
Developed by AnchorFree, which has worked on several software packages, Hotspot Shield VPN is an excellent choice for your Mac device. Its fast speed, global servers, and the ability to use a single account on multiple devices have made the service quite popular worldwide. It has already been downloaded over 600 million times and leads the pack by a long margin. While the premium version is the better choice, the free one isn’t far behind. You can even choose the 7-day free trial to get used to the service.
Should you download it?
Yes, definitely! While Hotspot Shield VPN is perfect for IT professionals and developers, it’s as useful for individuals looking to browse the web anonymously. In terms of ISP restrictions, the service doesn’t impose any limits and allows you to use a single account on up to 5 devices. With a 45-day money-back guarantee, there are enough reasons to go ahead with the download.

Hotspot Shieldfor Mac
7.9.0
Several countries are now actively introducing forms of internet censorship by blocking access to social networks like Facebook and Twitter. Another common form of internet restriction these days is when you watch movies or television online, these are often geo restricted and can only be viewed from the country hosting the content. Several countries also block access to adult, political and popular file sharing sites like Kickass and ThePirateBay to stop you getting access to pirated content.
The popular way to circumvent these restrictions is to use a VPN or proxy service that fools the website you are trying to access into thinking you are from a different country than you actually are. One of the most used VPN services for several years has been Hotspot Shield by AnchorFree because it offers a free version to its paid Elite subscription that gives you many advantages of a VPN but at no cost.
There are however, restrictions to using Hotspot Shield Free. Firstly it only allows you to access its US based VPN so you can only have a US IP address. Australia, Canada, Germany, Japan and UK VPNs are not available. It is also ad supported so every HTTP page you visit will have an inserted banner at the top of the page. Major streaming sites like Hulu or Netflix are forbidden and you must upgrade to use them.
Another major restriction in Hotspot Shield Free is a bandwidth limit to how much data you can use at once. This limit is currently 750MB of usage per day and resets every 24 hours. You’ll know when you reach the limit as you will be redirected to a webpage that says:
Your Bandwidth limit has been reached. To continue for free please interact with our sponsor
or this one:
Bandwidth limit reached for this site
All access to subsequent web pages will be blocked until you either upgrade to an Elite subscription or wait for the block to be reset.
Bypass the Hotspot Shield Bandwidth Limit/Block the Ads
Old methods to unblock this limit used to include resetting the network adapter MAC Address, but this no longer works. Ironically it’s actually far easier to bypass the bandwidth limit block now that it used to be and we were quite surprised it was so easy.
Probably the most annoying thing about using the free version of Hotspot Shield is the injection of Anchorfree’s ad banner into the top of your browser window. This not only looks unsightly but depending on your connection speed and hardware can also slow down the loading and displaying of pages. An old trick to block the ads using the Windows HOSTS file doesn’t work these days.
The great thing about getting rid of the Hotspot Shield ads and bypassing the bandwidth limit is you can kill two birds with one stone because both are removed together by the same method. And that method is to simply run an ad blocker extension.
Blocking in Chrome or Firefox
If you are running Chrome or Firefox there’s a wealth of ad or script blocking extensions, most of them will work for this purpose. AdGuard, AdBlock or AdBlock Plus work just fine in Google Chrome. For Firefox, AdBlock Plus and NoScript work perfectly to disable the ads and the bandwidth limit, although in NoScript make sure you don’t allow anchorfree.net. With this simple addition both of the most annoying Hotspot Shield restrictions will be gone!
Blocking With Internet Explorer
Although for Internet Explorer you can also install something like the Easylist Tracking Protection List to remove the ads and the bandwidth block, that is rather an all or nothing solution with no control. However, there is a very simple answer to this problem which is adding the required URL to the restricted sites list. This acts like an ad blocker for just Hotspot Shield. Here’s how to do it:
1. Open Internet Explorer, click the Options icon (cog wheel) and select Internet Options.
2. Click the Security tab, click on Restricted sites and then press the Sites button.
3. In the “Add this website to the zone:” box enter anchorfree.net, click Add and the URL will appear in the Websites box. Close the windows to get back to the IE main window.
You should now find no Hotspot Shield banners appearing in any Internet Explorer browser tabs from now on, a reload will be required on open tabs.
AnchorFree Expat Shield
Anchorfree has another free VPN service called Expat Shield. This is similar to Hotspot Shield but is based on an old version of Hotspot Shield and is supposed to use a UK based VPN instead of a US based one. As the website lists Expat Shield as “unlimited bandwidth” it could be a better option for users simply wanting to bypass restrictions imposed in their country.
Upon testing Expat Shield we found it’s not currently using a UK VPN and instead connecting to the US. This is why many Expat users can’t reach things like the BBC iPlayer because the IP is now coming from the US and not the UK. Whether it’s permanent or a temporary measure is unknown. Expat Shield also isn’t restricting access to streaming sites like hulu and Netflix, even though it comes from the same location as Hotspot Shield. We were unable to test whether streaming is available, but as you can access the sites, it remains possible.
We encountered no bandwidth blocks in Expat although the tray icon does change from green-red-green sometimes signifying the connection has temporarily dropped, but the web interface didn’t say it was disconnected. An ad banner is displayed but you can use the same methods to remove it from the browser window as Hotspot Shield.
The HOSTS file method also works as this is an older version of Hotspot Shield, open HOSTS located in “C:WindowsSystem32driversetc” with Notepad and add the following line.
127.0.0.1 box.anchorfree.net
It may take a few minutes to filter through and you might also need to clear your browser cache, but the ads should be removed from all your browsers after the change is recognized.
